John Deere announced launch of three products: chamber round balers, F8 and F9 series forage harvesters and 500R flagship sprayer.
F9 1000 harvester

The manufacturer explained that the next generation of fixed and variable chamber round balers has been designed to deliver superior performance, intelligent connectivity and high-quality bales.

The new series offers increased productivity, advanced automation and user-friendly features. These innovations are aimed at providing farmers with highly efficient and reliable solutions for their baling needs.

All models of the new generation of round balers from John Deere are equipped with advanced ISOBUS capabilities, ensuring complete machine integration into the John Deere Operations Centre.

This intelligent connection ensures that farmers can monitor bale quality on the go and thus operate more efficiently in the field. The connectivity feature allows for seamless synchronisation and secure storage of all invoicing-relevant information when leaving the field, John Deere said.

Additionally, an optional moisture monitoring feature measures the average moisture per bale in real-time and alerts the operator on the tractor display if the moisture content deviates from the pre-defined setting.

Tracking each bale’s size, drop location and moisture levels and documenting this data in the John Deere Operations Centre offers, for instance, the number of bales per field and dry-matter maps.

Philippe Steinmann, product marketing manager Europe at John Deere, said: “With this new generation of round balers, we’re delivering more than just power and productivity.

“We’re giving farmers a smarter, more connected baling experience, one that combines automation, precision, and exceptional comfort to help them get the most out of every field and every bale.”

500R sprayer

John Deere has also unveiled its new 500R flagship sprayer, designed to deliver top-tier performance with exceptional precision. This advanced sprayer ensures every drop hits the crop where it counts, thanks to its precise application control and perfect boom positioning, the manufacturer confirmed.

The premium cab prioritises driver comfort with numerous features and enhanced machine control.

John Deere said that the 500R’s design is a direct response to the needs and expectations of today’s farmers. Visibility from the cab to the boom has been maximised, giving operators a clear view of their working environment for safer and more efficient spraying.

The machine’s weight is evenly distributed, enhancing traction both in the field and on the road. Its narrow profile makes road transport easier and safer while still accommodating a large platform between the fluid tank and cabin.

The fully pressurised cab with Cat. 4 filtration protects operators from exposure to chemicals during spraying operations.

The combination of PowrSpray, ExactApply, and BoomTrac Pro 2 delivers up to 98% accuracy in spraying applications. PowrSpray is a dual-circuit pump system developed exclusively by John Deere.

Its key component, the Direct Rate Controller on the spray pump, can change output from minimum to maximum in less than three seconds, maintaining a consistent application rate even when forward speed changes.

ExactApply offers highly precise spray control through individual nozzle management and pulse width modulation, which maintains a constant droplet size across a large ground speed range, thus maximising application quality.

The automatic turn compensation ensures a constant application rate in case the machine follows a curved track, and the new multi-meter feature allows up to 11 different rates across the boom, bringing application to an even higher precision.

Solenne Bourgeois, product marketing manager in Europe for John Deere, emphasises the integrated nature of the 500R: “The new 500R is 100% John Deere made: it features the same premium cab as our combines, trusted suspension from our US self-propelled sprayers, the powerful engine from the 6R 250 tractor, and the proven PowrSpray technology from our successful R900i trailed sprayer.

“It’s a machine built for exceptional comfort, intuitive control, and smart spraying – delivering the performance farmers expect from John Deere.”

F8 and F9 forage harvesters

The manufacturer has also introduced its all-new self-propelled forage harvesters: the F8 and F9 series. These high-performance machines are designed to deliver a significantly improved driving experience, combined with advanced automation and precision farming technology as well as a further enhanced silage quality.

The manufacturer said that the F8 and F9 forage harvesters feature major enhancements to improve the operator’s driving experience. Starting with a new cabin that is wider and more comfortable for the driver up to the optional electric door closer that ensures a perfect seal every time.

Inside the cab, clever storage solutions allow users to find the perfect spot for all their items, from armrest compartments to behind-seat storage. There are dedicated holders for smartphones, keys, or larger items, as well as hot and cold beverages.

The premium infotainment system includes Bluetooth connectivity, radio, streaming, and hands-free calling, ensuring crystal-clear sound quality. Multiple charging options, including 12V and USB ports, are conveniently placed for all power needs, and smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allows for seamless access to calls, messages, music, and voice commands.

F8 600 harvester

The ActiveSeat in the F8 and F9 series swivels 16° to the right and to the left for easy access and exceptional visibility. The optional ActiveSeat II also offers fully adjustable electric controls, cooling/heating, a massage function, and active suspension technology that isolates up to 90% of vertical movements for a smooth ride.

John Deere continued that the F8 and F9 forage harvesters are equipped with intuitive controls for machine and harvesting settings to enhance user experience. Machine settings can be stored in different driver profiles, allowing for a quick start of harvesting without the need to adjust settings with every change of driver.

The new ergonomic CommandPRO joystick, featuring up to 11 customisable buttons, is easily programmed via the touchscreen of the G5/G5Plus CommandCenter display. This includes settings for header folding, spout lift, AutoTrac, ProTouch, Machine Sync, 4WD and more.

Philippe Steinmann, product marketing manager Europe at John Deere, said: “The F8 and F9 can be equipped with advanced automation and John Deere Precision Ag Technology, the best we ever offered in forage harvesting.

“From Ground Speed Automation to intelligent crop tracking or ProTouch Harvest, these features help operators to focus on the harvesting job, boosting both efficiency and forage quality.”

Kverneland are attending this years Cereals event. Visit stand 822.

Sprayers will include an iXtrack trailed sprayer and an iXter B mounted sprayer with front tank, both hosting the latest in Kverneland’s application technology and Sync telematics.

Mechanical weeding solutions from Kverneland

Mechanical weeding continues to develop in effectiveness, and alongside the Ecomat shallow plough range will be a range of mechanical weeding solutions in the form of Kverneland’s inter-row cultivators and rotary hoe models.

These include the Helios – a star-wheel equipped rotary hoe suited to cereal crops, and the Onyx tined hoe, designed for inter-row applications such as maize, sugar beet and veg crops.

At 6m wide, the hydraulically folding Helios rotary hoe uses a series of cast iron star wheels, mounted in pairs on a tandem axle.

Downward pressure for each pair is controlled by adjusting the amount of hydraulic pressure applied to the star wheels, to create a fine, delicate control to suit the surface of the field and a crop’s growth stage, to carry out shallow weeding through the top 10mm of soil.

“Helios provides an effective mechanical solution for black grass control, with the star wheels capable of pulling out small weeds and leaving them on the surface to wither and die,” explains Kverneland product specialist Adam Burt.

For inter-row applications, the Onyx can be combined with a Lynx guidance interface plus camera and control panel technology by Tillet & Hague, for enhanced precision.

The guidance interface sits between the weeder frame and tractor three-point linkage and can be equipped with up to two, forward-facing colour scanning cameras to provide active side-shift of up to 25cm, keeping the hoe positively steered to ensure accurate working between the rows, even at high forward speeds

Ecomat shallow plough

Kverneland’s Ecomat shallow plough range has been extended to include models for in-furrow use, in addition to on-land versions. In-furrow models are available in six-, seven- and eight-furrow builds, and join the existing eight- and 10-furrow on-land versions.

Developed as an option for minimum disturbance seedbed preparation, the Ecomat shallow plough offers mechanical control of pests and weeds through soil inversion, reducing the reliance on chemical methods.

“Ecomat is a half-way house between a plough and a cultivator,” says Adam.

“As a shallow plough, the Ecomat still turns soil over but without needing to work as deep as a traditional plough, so it is faster and more fuel efficient.

“We’re achieving 95% inversion at a depth of 9cm, with an implement that is easier to pull than a traditional plough, while doing a far better job of inversion than a cultivator.”

Cereals Event 2025 will be the first chance to see the updated Fendt Rogator Gen 2.
Fendt’s Rogator Gen 2.

Fendt’s marketing manager Ed Dennett explained that customers have driven its decision to increase machine output and overcome some of the restrictions self-propelled sprayers face when it comes to difficult conditions.

“The improved OptiNozzle drift reduction technology will help to increase the number of days operators can safely spray and improve operational efficiency,” he added.

The updates are available on the latest 645, 655 and 665 Rogator, with the top model boasting a 6000-litre tank capacity and a 307 horsepower engine to operate a 24 or 36 metre working width.

The manufacturer confirmed that all models in the range automatically select nozzle combinations relative to forward speed, which enables optimum nozzle pressure. This, in turn, reduces drift, which is also maintained as forward speed changes.

“The improved boom levelling system means that spray height is optimised at 50 centimetres through the Rogator’s OptiSonic ultrasonic boom,” Mr Dennett added.

Rogator’s updated technology

The Fendt team said that they have always been focused on operator comfort and have developed class-leading cabs. The latest Rogator features a category 4 cab filtration system and offers an extremely smooth ride which provides a new level of operator comfort.

Improvements to boom stability will also offer greater confidence when spraying in difficult conditions.

“As part of our FendtONE operating concept, the Rogator will feel familiar to any Fendt operator. It is also intuitive to operate for operators who have not experienced a Fendt before. The Rogator can share operational data with tractors and other machinery, and the FendtONE offboard system can capture, report and save this data to improve future applications,” Mr Dennett continued.

Self-propelled sprayers are operated for long periods, are increasingly covering longer distances as farms grow, and can be put under pressure throughout the year. To support its customers, Fendt now offers an eight-year warranty and has a group of knowledgeable dealers to service Rogator customers.

“We want customers to be able to run their Rogators for longer, to make their operations more sustainable and to provide them with better value over the course of their ownership. The latest Rogator delivers this and, with its updated technology, is better placed to provide what growers need to be more precise and efficient,” concludes Mr Dennett.

Fighting back against ALS resistance in sugar beet https://www.farmersguide.co.uk/arable/sugar-beet/fighting-back-against-als-resistance-in-sugar-beet/ Mon, 05 May 2025 07:00:00 +0000 https://www.farmersguide.co.uk/?p=105888 Alternative modes of action are needed to tackle problem weeds in sugar beet, due to resistance to ALS inhibitor herbicides.

The post Fighting back against ALS resistance in sugar beet appeared first on Farmers Guide.

]]>
Sugarbeet field
Alternative modes of action should be used to target weeds in sugar beet.

With resistance to ALS inhibitor herbicides confirmed in a range of common broad-leaved weeds (in particular poppies, chickweed and, to a lesser extent, mayweed), alternative modes of action should be used to target problem weeds in sugar beet.

Speedwell species are also less effectively controlled by the majority of ALS inhibitors and can easily slip through programmes unchecked unless an appropriate mode of action is used.

Metamitron to the rescue

Two of ADAMA’s beet-specific herbicides, Goltix Titan (metamitron 525g/litre + quinmerac 40g/litre SC) and Goltix 70SC (metamitron 700g/litre SC), are ideal for inclusion in ALS stewardship programmes as they both offer good control of the target weeds mentioned above and have an excellent record in terms of crop safety.

Goltix Titan and Goltix 70SC also benefit from being able to be applied at their maximum individual dose rates from the pre-emergence timing (including at the peri-emergence stage).

Targeting common poppy

Goltix Titan is the best option for the control of ALS resistant poppies thanks to its additional active ingredient, quinmerac.

Two suggested programmes for the control of ALS resistant poppy are as follows:

Option A

  1. Pre-emergence application of Goltix Titan (2 litres/ha).

…followed by…

  • Post-emergence (T1) application of Goltix Titan (1.3 litres/ha) plus any additional actives required e.g. a low dose of Powertwin (200g/litre phenmedipham and 200g/litre. ethofumesate) plus an oil adjuvant

Option B

  1. Very early post-emergence application of Goltix Titan (1.5 litres/ha).

…followed by…

  • Post-emergence (T2) application of Goltix Titan (1.5 litres/ha) plus any additional active ingredients required e.g. a low dose of Powertwin (200g/litres phenmedipham and 200g/litre ethofumesate) plus an oil adjuvant.

Mayweed control

Both Goltix 70SC and Goltix Titan provide good control of mayweed species, with the efficacy of typical programmes ranging from 80 to 100%.

However, a single application will not suffice in weed populations with ALS insensitivity. Therefore, to ensure effective control, applications should be continued until weed emergence is complete.

Challenging chickweed

A pre-emergence application of Goltix 70SC will provide a good start to chickweed control.

However, Goltix Titan will provide even better efficacy (approximately +5% better control compared to Goltix 70SC): this is due to the quinmerac in Goltix Titan which will primarily be absorbed via the weed’s root system, but can also be absorbed via foliar contact.

As such, Goltix Titan will also work well as a post-emergence treatment.

For the best results, post-em applications should be made as early as possible (when the weeds are from cotyledon to the two-leaf stage) and when there is adequate soil moisture to support rapid root uptake.

Results.

Key pointers for effective weed control in sugar beet

  • Use alternative modes of action to target ALS resistant weeds including:
    • Goltix 70SC (metamitron 700g/litre SC)
    • Goltix Titan (metamitron 525 g/litre + quinmerac 40g/litre SC)
    • Powertwin (200g/litre phenmedipham and 200g/litre ethofumesate SC)
  • The addition of alternative modes of action is essential in a Conviso Smart programme.
  • The best results will be achieved when pre-emergence and post-emergence treatments are applied.
  • T1 and T2 are the key timings for the control of the majority of weeds but be prepared to wait until T3 if the weather is not conducive to weed growth earlier in the crop’s development.
  • An oil adjuvant must be used to improve the efficacy of SC herbicides.
Resistance to ALS sulfonylurea herbicides in chickweed, poppy and scentless mayweed was first identified in the UK in 2000, 2001 and 2002, respectively. Data from a resistance summary by Stephen Moss for Weed research action group (WRAG) 2016.

Having been asked by farmers and dealers alike, the company began considering the design, specification, and the needs of small to medium arable and vegetable growers requiring a quality build and a high specification sprayer with robustly constructed booms.

The XRF range of hydraulic cross rear fold booms from 12 to 15 metres slots in between Landquip’s amenity sprayers with their six to 10 metre booms and the arable mounted machine range with aluminium booms from 18 to 30 metres.

Ideally suited to tractors of 80-150 hp, the XRF machines are compact close-coupled offering good weight distribution with tank shapes that result in a low centre of gravity. A 1000 litre, 12 metre XRF 1012 weighs 850 kg.

The high-grade polyethylene tanks available in 800, 1000 or 1200 litres have ultra-smooth, easy-to-clean inner and outer surfaces with efficient sump for exceptional draining to use every last drop, aiding washing out and minimising water use.

What to expect

Constructed of the same polyethylene material, the 65-litre system washtank, 20-litre hand wash, and 30-litre swing-out low-level chemical induction bowl complete with can wash, hopper wash, and agitation jet, all come fitted as standard equipment, Landquip confirmed.

The close-coupled heavy-duty cross rear fold boom – requiring one double-acting tractor spool valve – folds to a narrow 2.6 metres, adding to the machine’s compact size and ease of transportation in and out of narrow gateways.

Equipped with stainless spray lines, mono- or tri-jet nozzle bodies can be specified and fitted with ISO colour-coded long-life spray tips in moulded acetal resin, an extremely hard-wearing polymer.

Both the left- and right-hand booms have independent spring suspension, two-directional break-back tips and adjustable protection skid.

The manufacturer added that a high lift height mast enables boom spray heights from 0.3 to 2.1 metres using a single-acting tractor spool valve.

As with all Landquip sprayers, the new XRF-mounted machines are built to customers’ exact requirements with the following choices of three, five, or seven electric switching sections, GPS rate control, GPS mapping and auto section control, and pump sizes to meet all application volumes of chemicals and liquid fertiliser.

Retail prices from £12,750 + VAT. For further details email Landquip at sales@landquip.co.uk

The post Ascenso helps farmers choose best tyres appeared first on Farmers Guide.

Ascenso tyres on tractor pulling trailed sprayer in farmer's field

Ascenso, which offers a range of tyres suitable for sprayers, including self-propelled sprayers and mounted sprayers, said that this season many farmers will be asking:

  • Is it necessary to change the tyres on my tractor if I am pulling a trailed crop sprayer?
  • Is it better to keep my original wide tyres because it is easier not to change them?
  • Should I change to narrow row crop tyres to avoid damaging my crops?

A spokesperson for the company said: “You may think that there is only a slight difference in the width of the tyres, but the difference in terms of crop yield will be noticeable.

“Spraying requires numerous trips across your fields and the impact in terms of soil and crop damage will be significant.”

Wide VF tyres

Ascenso explained that wide tyres are better in certain conditions, but the effect of wide tyres will depend on the tyre technology used.

Wide tyres, particularly low-pressure VF tyres, would be suitable during the first spraying operations at the end of the winter season. In this situation, narrow row crop tyres, which require higher inflation pressures and do not have a large contact area with the ground, will be less suitable.

For all fertiliser applications before sowing, the use of wide, low-pressure VF tyres has many advantages. High load capacity, low-pressure VF tyres have flexible yet robust casings capable of carrying heavy loads, allowing the use of larger sprayer tanks and wider booms.

Working at pressures as low as 0.8 bar, VF tyres help avoid soil compaction and the formation of ruts during soil preparation. VF tyres do not require pressure adjustments during cyclic operations and can operate at the same inflation pressure with a full or empty sprayer tank, Ascenso continued.

“Standard non-VF tyres are not suitable for spraying during the wet season, as compaction to the lower layers of soil will be significant, and it will then be necessary to repair the damaged soil.

“You can avoid these additional costs and loss of time with the use of tyres more suitable for spraying in wet conditions. The effect of a low-pressure VF tyre working at 0.8 bar will be very different from that of a standard technology tyre, which will require inflating to at least 1.6 bar to carry the thousands of litres of liquid transported in the sprayer tank, or more if the sprayer is equipped with wide booms.

“If you are looking to fit wide VF tyres, the Ascenso VDR 2000 comes in a range of sizes suitable for self-propelled sprayers, trailed sprayers and tractors. Featuring an advanced tread design with a wider and longer footprint, the VDR 2000 reduces soil stress and compaction offering improved yields. With its advance VF technology, it can carry heavy loads at low inflating pressures,” a spokesperson for Ascenso added.

Narrow row crop tyres

During the spring season if conditions are not too wet, or in the summer, fitting narrow row crop tyres will have less impact on the soil surface during spraying operations, the tyre expert said.

Unlike wide tyres, which crush the crops, narrow tyres have less impact on the soil and allow young seedlings to develop correctly throughout the field. The limited width of the narrow tyres footprint reduces the number of plants damaged as well as the impact on your crop’s root system.

The Ascenso team added: “If you are pulling a trailed crop sprayer with your tractor, to reduce the impact on the soil surface and damage to plants, both sprayer and tractor should be fitted with the same width of tyre and the sprayer tyres must follow in the same tracks between the rows as the tractor.

“Ascenso’s VDR 900 VF tyres have been designed to carry 40% more load than a conventional radial tire, or the same load at 40% lower pressure.

“The more radially stiffer tyre makes it possible to transition from field to road and vice versa without adjusting the inflation pressure. At the reduced pressure required for field use, the tyre can also run at full speed on the road yet deliver the same fuel efficiencies as a standard tyre at road pressure.”

The company said that steel belts offer puncture protection and distributes uniform ground pressure which helps reduce soil compaction and crop damage.

These tyres have been designed with stronger lugs with a large contact patch that gives excellent traction with the unique and innovative design of Ascenso’s mud breaker technology self-cleaning characteristics, which decreases slippage, delivers lower fuel consumption, and increases overall productivity.

To help cater for a broader range of soil conditions throughout the growing season, the Danish manufacturer has introduced A-shares and L-shaped knives to fit to the machine’s inter-row weeding arms.

Where previously the only option had been low-draft weeding wires, the new blades are designed to deal with larger, more mature weeds and help in getting closer to the crop plants.

This is particularly important in a growing season when poor weather stretches the interval between hoeing passes, allowing weeds to grow on and get ahead of the crop.

The more aggressive action of the new shares also helps to break up capping and surface compaction, particularly in the wheelings, aiding rainfall penetration and providing a flush of mineralised nitrogen for the crop.

New spot spraying system

In addition, Farmdroid’s new spot-spraying system was on show for the first time on the Opico stand.

Designed for either in-row or inter-row applications of pesticides and micro-nutrients, it provides targeted doses rather than broad-brush, blanket coverage.

The new set-up can be used to target either the crop plant or the bare ground in between.

In that way insecticide, fungicide, fertiliser and selective herbicide rates can be cut to a fraction of the normal broadacre rate.

Studies conducted in Denmark have shown that the system can lead to reductions in herbicide use of up to 94%. It also means cheaper non-selective herbicides can be used between the crop rows.

0% finance

While Farmdroid has gained a name for herbicide-free weed control in row crops over the last five years, this latest development broadens the energy-independent machine’s appeal and extends its reach to conventional growers looking to reduce their reliance on agro-chemicals.

Recognising the increased pressure UK farming businesses are under, Opico has put together a 0% finance package spread over three years which it says should help to make a standard six-row FD20’s £77,089 purchase price affordable to all.

The company will also be exhibiting the SKAi sprayer, an exciting collaboration between Team and Scotland-based SoilEssentials.

The SKAi spot spraying system uses artificial intelligence to identify and precisely target individual weeds for spot spraying.

With SKAi growers can reduce their chemical use by up to 95% compared to blanket application, target treatments specifically where they’re needed, reduce environmental impact and save money on inputs, Team explains.

The SKAi spot sprayer has been custom designed in collaboration with Team Sprayers and includes a 1,000-litre clean water tank and a 200-litre chemical tank for efficient mixing and application and is capable of spraying up to 10+km/hr.

There’s a simple, tablet-based user interface and cloud-connected, remote access to technical support. Real-time on-screen camera feeds show target detection and the spray control shows target confidence and nozzle activation.

SKAi is complemented by a cloud-based support system with device management providing remote system and AI model updates.

Designed to be retrainable, SKAi provides a sustainable approach to addressing agricultural challenges.
